The Students for Economic Justice Summer Internship Program is a project of CPI which aims to build stronger capacity for community organizing in San Diego. It is an intensive 8-week program that gives students organizing training through political education, skills building, and hands-on in-the-field experience working on campaigns for economic and social justice. Students receive trainings from various community leaders throughout San Diego and will finish the program with a better understanding of the political landscape of the region.
Overall Goals:
- To provide future leaders and organizers with a critical perspective with organizing for social and economic justice
- To learn lessons from past social and economic justice movements
- To continue developing the culture of best practices within community activism and organizing
- To develop new organizers and strengthen the pipeline of students and community organizing in economic justice
History:
CPI launched the SEJ program in 2000 and held summer programs every year for the next five years. Former SEJ interns have gone on to become leaders in various community organizations and labor unions in San Diego and beyond. After a brief hiatus, CPI recognized the importance of building new young leaders and decided to re-launch the program in 2011 with six interns: three SDSU students, one Point Loma Nazarene student, one National University student, and one recent graduate from UC Berkeley.
Beyond participating in the trainings, the interns also helped various community organizations and labor unions with their events over the summer by helping with set-up, signing people in, and distributing literature.
